The Jibarito

Once in a while on DESIGNwatcher I blog about off-topic issues like food or music because I can't resist. The other day my friend Michelle, over at eatdrinkbe, sent me the October issue of Saveur, dedicated solely to Chicago eating. I am so thankful she did because it turned me on to the The Jibarito, a unique Chicago-Puerto Rican sandwich composed of seasoned skirt steak, sautéed onions, and the fixins, in between two crisp strips of fried plantains. I ventured out with my foodie friend Molly to Humbolt Park's Borinquen, the birthplace of the sweet and savory sandwich last night. We sat in the back and devoured two steak Jibaritos and agreed it was a $7 extremely well spent. Borinquen 1720 N. California Ave. Chicago.
