Yesterday I was one of the few who have ever ventured inside The Schnabel House in Brentwood Park, a residential home designed by Frank Gehry for Rockwell and Marna Schnabel in the mid 1980s. I don't want to give too much away because this will be appearing in print soon, but it is an incredible property, and I mean literally incredible, as in, hard to believe. The above photo on the right is just one of the several freestanding structures on the property; Marna Schnabel wanted a dome on the property to mimic one of her favorite L.A. landmarks, the Griffith Park Observatory, and Gehry made it so. Photo on the left is Gehry jumping on one of his cardboard desks in 1972. Now back to the transcribing...

This dream-like photograph shows each phase of the sun over Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge taken over a six month period. Believe it or not, the image was captured on a pin-hole camera made from an empty can with a 0.25mm aperture and a single sheet of photographic paper. Photographer Justin Quinnell strapped the camera to a telephone pole and left it untouched between December 19, 2007 and June 21, 2008—the Winter and Summer solstices. Gorgeous.

I'm thinking I need a little bit more lo-fi in my life. I love love love this "Meg" Diana camera ($180), one of two White Stripes editions of Lomography cameras. The all-plastic Diana camera is a cult legend and dates back to the early 1960s. It's famous for dreamy, radiant images and it's been faithfully reproduced and made even cooler with the help of Meg White.

I've recently made room for a new blog on my short list of daily blog reads: Introducing the new, the fantastic, the ever-so-cool, The Green Gorilla! The G.G., authored by my friend C.J., is part blog, part overall musical education I think. It's topical, it's old, it's weird, it's just good. So far C.J. had shared rare videos and recordings of Al Green, Rod Stewart, Steve Winwood, Queen and Herbie Hancock—to name some of just the better known artists. Let's just say, there's something indescribable that I want from a music blog, and The Green Gorilla's got it—so check it out now! Here's just a taste, and one of my favorite G.G. posts to date:

Great Expectations

Just checked out Lost & Found's new special (permanent?) exhibition which opened last weekend and it is...expectedly great. On trend with the throw back to the '80s theme (that's 1880s, dudes), this new installation is really inspired. I'd call it seven/ninths Great Expectations one and a half/ninths crafty and just a smidgen of Holiday cheer—if I had to guesstimate. Seriously people, check this out, it's rad. 6324 Yucca, Los Angeles.

Fortune Chicken

I came across this Dutch "Fortune Chicken" ($19) today and had to put it on the blog immediately. I'm not sure exactly what it is or the history (if there is one), but here's what I do know: it's a 3"x3" chicken with the simple instructions of, "Smash this chicken in times of confusion or great despair". To smash or not to smash? The choice is all yours...

Danger Dogs

I am really freaking out about about these "Beware of Dog" pet portrait signs from Nepal, hand painted on metal. It's fair trade folk art, and you can commission your own pet for about $250 or browse the "ready-made" inventory at rates between $100 and $200. Get in your order in early October and you'll have your painting before the holidays.
